How accounts, workspaces, and organizations fit together.

---

## The hierarchy

inference shell has three layers of ownership:

| Layer | What it is | What it owns |
|-------|-----------|--------------|
| **You** | Your account | Profile, sign-in security, sessions, notification preferences, connected apps |
| **Workspace** | Where work lives, alone or shared | Apps, agents, flows, knowledge, vaults, API keys, members, billing |
| **Organization** | A company layer above workspaces | Org-wide billing, usage policy, managed accounts, org admins |

Everything you build lives in a workspace. Every account starts with a **personal workspace**, a private workspace that works exactly like a shared one, with you as its only member. Workspaces can optionally belong to an **organization**, which is how companies run many workspaces under one bill and one governance policy.

Workspaces are called teams in the API (`/teams`, `team_id`). See the [Workspaces API](/docs/api/rest/teams).

---

## Settings follow the hierarchy

Settings opens as a dialog from the **settings** button in the sidebar (on mobile, from the account tab). Its list has one group per layer:

| Group | Pages |
|-------|-------|
| **personal** | profile, security, sessions, authorized apps, notifications, data & privacy |
| **workspace** | general, members, api keys, usage policy, billing |
| **organization** | overview, usage policy; for org admins also workspaces, administrators, managed accounts, verified domains, billing |

The **personal** group is identical whichever workspace you're in. The **workspace** group follows the workspace switcher and shows the current workspace's name under its caption. The **organization** group lists its pages when your current workspace belongs to one; on a shared workspace outside an organization it has only **overview**, which offers to create one, and a personal workspace has no organization pages. **log out** is at the end of the list. Engines and remotes are not settings: they sit in the sidebar under **resources**.

Pages never mix layers: an org-billed workspace's billing page points you to organization billing rather than rendering the org's numbers under a workspace heading.

---

## Which one am I acting as?

Your current workspace (the switcher in the sidebar) decides where new work lands and whose resources you see. Switching workspaces switches everything: apps, credentials, knowledge, and billing context all follow the selected workspace.

Things that never switch: your profile, your sessions, your notification preferences, and personal connections you've authorized (though each personal connection is usable only in the workspace where you connected it; see [credentials](/docs/secrets/credentials)).
